Gabriel saw her face go white the moment he'd uttered the words—words he knew by rote after marrying several couples himself; words that had never been more meaningful or powerful until he'd spoken them in Sophie's presence. Except he wasn't sure how much she'd actually heard.
He caught her as she swooned, hoping her faint had more to do with her tightly laced undergarments and heat than the fact that she'd married him.
Several ladies in the congregation gasped. The people in the front pew scooted to the side as he brought Sophie over and sat her down. Hester came quickly to his side, fanning Sophie's flushed face where tendrils of sweat trailed down her temples, plastering her hair to her skin.
Annabelle appeared, her lace-mittened hands like restless birds. “Is she all right? Oh dear, this isn't because she's in a delicate condition, is it?”
Gabriel sent her a black look that had her retreating back to her seat.
But she'd said the words just loud enough for those closest to hear. And they would pass it along.
Not that it mattered.
All that mattered was getting his wife comfortable enough to come to terms that he was her husband.
Sophie stirred and her eyes fluttered opened. When she saw him, she reached for his hands and held on tight—a movement that heartened him.
“Is it over? Are we married?”
He nodded, wondering if the assent would cause her to swoon again. But she struggled up from her slumped position. Her wan appearance worried him. Perhaps she was truly ill.
“Can we go home now?”
It was foolish how her words went straight to his heart. “Yes. I'll have James prepare the carriage.”
She moistened her lips again, making him wonder if she were thirsty. “Hester, can I trouble you for a cup of water?”
The older woman hurried away on the errand as Sophie sat as still as a doll against the back of the pew. Angela crawled onto the bench next to her.
Sophie sent her a tired look. “Is this okay? That I got married and everything?”
The girl responded by wrapping her arms around her neck and squeezing. Sophie squeezed her back until Angela released her. Gabriel was puzzled by their strange bond after so short a time.
James made a few closing comments to the assembled group, then motioned for Gabriel to follow. He helped Sophie to her feet and walked her out to the carriage, Angela in tow.
Hester arrived with the water, which Sophie accepted. She seemed refreshed by the long drink and touched the older woman's arm. “Thank you. For everything.”
Hester beamed and waved as Gabriel helped his wife into the carriage.
When James flicked the crop and the carriage pulled away from the church, Gabriel released a breath he'd been holding for a long time.
Maybe years.
